School Profile: Savannah College of Art and Design
Founded in 1978, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has a total enrollment of about 13,000, with students from nearly 50 states and 115 countries. Nearly a quarter of the student body is international, and SCAD has campuses in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France. Considered one of the region’s top art schools, SCAD started its distance education program in 2003, and today offers a range of affordable, flexible undergraduate and graduate degrees through online and hybrid delivery options. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and holds several specialized accreditations (i.e., NAAB, CIDA). There are more than 650 full and part-time faculty, nearly 80% of which hold terminal degrees.
One of the 12 Best Online Graphic Design Degrees
All degrees combine equal emphasis on theory and practice to provide students a liberal-arts-cum-professional-training background, and graduates’ current employers reflect the school’s highly applicable curricula: Disney, Google, Facebook, DeviantArt, Colle McVoy, Microsoft, R/GA, Cartoon Network, and Design Ranch, among others. (For those interested, there are also undergraduate and graduate tracks in Advertising, Business Design and Leadership, Design Management, Fashion (MA/MFA), Interior Design (MA), Preservation Design (MA), and Writing (MFA); plus 70 minors and certificate programs.)
The school’s 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio helps to create an intimate, collaborative learning community that prioritizes individualized and experiential learning: over 70% of classes consist of less than 20 students, and no classes have more than 50. While all degrees integrate some classroom-oriented portfolio practicums, students also have the unqiue opportunity to participate in SCAD’s Collaborative Learning Center, working alongside some of the most influential businesses, brands and organizations in the world; Procter and Gamble, Electronic Arts, Fossil, The Coca-Cola Company, Reebok, Saint Laurent, BMW, Adobe, and FOX Sports are among previous partners.
